Dear Public Services Group member
Through our membership of HSE’s Slips and Trips Stakeholder Group, we’re currently supporting the HSE in understanding how stakeholders are dealing with slips and trips.
We’re surveying IOSH members over three years to better understand current awareness, attitudes and practice, and to track what impact HSE initiatives are having. A joint HSE-IOSH report from the first survey will be available on the IOSH website soon.
In the meantime, here’s the latest from the HSE:
Stop Slips in Kitchens
Last year alone 1,863 people working in the catering and hospitality sector received an injury that kept them off work for more than three days. Over the next 12 months HSE will be raising awareness of the causes of slip accidents in kitchens and how to prevent them.

Watch Your Step in Education
55% of all accidents in education are caused by a slip or a trip. HSE is running workshops around the country for those responsible for health and safety in higher and further education and local authority health and safety advisors for schools.

Slips and trips in the Cleaning Industry
Cleaning is a key factor in controlling slips and trips. This year HSE and local authorities will be raising awareness on the dangers of incorrect floor cleaning regimes that lead to slip and trip accidents. HSE is holding a series of free half-day seminars across the country aimed at managers, supervisors and cleaning staff.
You can find out more information at the HSE website.

Risk mapping tool
HSE has produced a simple guide to help people identify potential slip and trip hazards at work. Designed primarily for safety reps, the mapping tool can equally easily be used by managers, supervisors and safety professionals.
